Canada facing threats from China over Huawei ban

China is warning Canada that there will be repercussions if they ban Huawei but Canada does not seem to be bothered. Relationship between the two countries has been strained, after the arrest of a top Huawei executive in Vancouver last month.

Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian authorities riding on an American extradition warrant, that caused great dismay amongst the Chinese.

The Canadian report on Huawei is processed

Canada, along with some other countries think that Huawei’s 5G technologies may be used for espionage. Security implications of such networks are still being studied by the Canadians. The report will take time, and is not expected to be completed any time soon.

While Canada has not yet confirmed if they will ban Huawei or not, some of their allies have already taken the plunge and have imposed restrictions on certain Huawei equipment. Their reasons include safety and the risk of possible spying. Canada is making it very clear that safety is a priority and it will not cut any corners when it comes to national security.

Canada is determined to do what is right, without any pressure from China.  China had made similar threats when Australia banned the Huawei 5G equipment last year, citing security reasons.

China has arrested two Canadians

Huawei’s ties to the Chinese government are under the scanner. Chinese authorities, have arrested and detained two Canadians, after the arrest of Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has called on world leaders to look at the arrest of these two Canadians raising concerns about their detainment and safety.

Trudeau is also worried about what he calls a ‘blending’ between commercial interests and political interests, and is concerned that Canada should not be ‘used’ by the Chinese in any way.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government continues to threaten Canada and has asked them to stop involving their allies. Canada has replied, saying their only duty is to stand by the law, to make sure that everything is done legally and ethically and that nothing untoward takes place under their watch.

5G may be the latest technology and the one that everyone wants, but only when the conditions are perfectly clear, safe and legal.
